The meal moth takes Manhattan
article about moths mentioning Standards Vice President
original article here @ Brickunderground:
After several acquaintances complained to us recently about moth infestations in their Manhattan apartments, we checked with our pest management expert, Gil Bloom, to see whether a larger trend is taking wing.
According to Bloom, complaints about pantry moths (a.k.a. meal moths) have been on the upswing for several years now, corresponding with a trend toward bulk shopping. Call it the Costco effect.

New York not in line for powerful bed bug poison
Article mentioning Standards' VP Gil Bloom Read the full article on Brick Underground Here:
Yesterday, Ohio electrified the nation’s growing legion of bed bug sufferers: The state asked feds for emergency permission to battle the bugs with an insecticide said to be 100 percent effective against the blood suckers but not approved for home use.
A dozen states joined Ohio’s petition, but BrickUnderground has learned that New York was not among them.
"The Department of Environmental Conservation has not requested that exemption,” says Gil Bloom, a BrickTank expert and an entomologist who is also the president of Standard Pest Management in Queens and a member of Mayor Bloomberg’s nascent Bedbug Advisory Board. “I can only conjecture they’re probably taking a wait and see approach.”
Bloom says New York is quite conservative about pesticides.

Bedbug Nightwatch available at Standard
The NightWatch is designed to function as a lure and monitor, as it mimics a living, breathing human body, by combining CO2, a proprietary kairomone lure, and a patented thermal lure for a powerful three-pronged attractant and trapping system. When bedbugs approach to feed on what they think is a human, they fall into the pitfall traps made of highly polished material and cannot escape. NightWatch can catch both mature and immature bedbugs, and since the monitor's detection period spans the 7-10 days bedbugs take between meals, it can detect infestations the very first time they try to bite. No other available product or technology detects new infestations so quickly. To purchase call (718) 728-4040. To pick up get directions here.
NightWatch Unit Plus Pack of 4 Lure Cartridges $680.00 Free Shipping NightWatch Multiple Unit Purchase 5 or more, $610.00 each Free Shipping Chemical Lure Packs (4 lures in each pack) $45 a pack. Free Shipping Prices dont include Co2 cartridges.
Due to the bio capabilities of bed bugs and the construction of the capture and control products the possibility of eggs being transferred exists to a limited extent. Ergo in order to protect our customers as well as our own environ bed bug items are not returnable once opened from their original factory packaging. While this may seem inconvenient this policy is primarily for your protection.
Please note that the NightWatch units work best with the CO2 attractant. The 20 oz. cans are available at hardware outlets and sporting stores or at our corporate office in Queens, NY.

NY Times Article On Bedbugs Mentions Standard Pest Management

The most common way people discover they have bed bugs is when they wake up with bites. But only about a third of people react to bed bug bites, and many of those who do have reactions mistake them for mosquito bites. You may also get the same kind of bites from bird mites, says Gil Bloom, who is vice president of Standard Pest Management, an exterminating company in Queens, and director of public affairs for the New York State Pest Management Association. You can sometimes detect other evidence like bed bug feces, which look like tiny black specks, or blood stains from a bug that has just had a full meal.

CLIMBUP INSECT INTERCEPTORThis device can be used pro-actively, as an early detection device, in dwellings that are not already infested and can be used to assess if control methods have been effective by intercepting bed bugs as they travel to beds, couches, or other furniture in search of a blood meal. In addition to using the Climbup™ insect interceptors, it is important to contact a pest management professional to deliver a comprehensive bed bug management program.
The CLIMBUP™ insect interceptor forms a barrier between floor and bed.
Bed bugs approaching bed from room will climb up exterior surface and fall into the outer pitfall ring. Bed bugs climbing down from bed will be found in center well.

NY Times Article Quotes Standards Vice President Gil Bloom
Roaches and Mice Thrive in a Recession
By Michael WilsonBrace yourselves for more fun news: recessions, it turns out, while bad for humans, may be good for cockroaches and mice.
Veterans in the pest control industry said that their customers, both residential and commercial, appear to be sacrificing on regular exterminations as a cost-cutting measure. While restaurants are bound by the threats of steep fines, apartment landlords and office buildings are cutting back services, the exterminators said.
Robert Agatowski, with Control Exterminating Company on East 33rd Street in Manhattan, recalled a recent call from a general manager of a business.
“He said, ‘It’s very simple. I don’t know if we can make the rent or the payroll,’” Mr. Agatowski recalled. “‘So in other words, you’re out. We’ll step on the bugs and kick the mice.’ The exterminating almost becomes like a luxury item.”
He and other exterminators interviewed this week were careful not to name names.
“People are being penny wise and pound foolish,” said Gil Bloom, with Standard Pest Management in Long Island City, Queens. “Monitoring pest control is very much pest prevention. It’s not just killing what’s there today. One mouse, a month later, could easily be a dozen mice.”

RATS. LET"S STOP THEM!
New York City Department of Health and Mental HygieneRATS. LET'S STOP THEM!
Rat Control Guidelines for Property Owners and Superintendents
This new pamphlet released by the city explains how you (the property owner) and the building superintendent, can create a rat hostile environment. Here are some key topics.
- Any portion of your property, in either public or private space, that is "conducive to feeding and habitation of rats" is a violation of the law. And each violation carries a penalty of $200 to $2000.
- The best way to exterminate them is to hire a licensed exterminator. If you do it yourself, read the label, never put down traps or poison where children or pets might reach them.

PRACTICAL PEST CONTROL TIPS : SUMMER 2008 (part 2)
The following is a list of some practical steps from the STANDARD Pest Management experts that you can take to avoid unwanted and injurious pests from interfering with your summer fun.
- Trim trees so they do not touch your building. Many pests, especially ants, gain access this way.
- Seal up holes around pipes, cable entry points and remove lint accumulation from dryer flaps.
- Pest proof the base of all exterior doors especially the garage as it often provides pest harborage.
- Store refuse and recyclables away from the exterior as they can attract a number of pests.
- Keep firewood and debris away from the house and make sure it's up off the ground.

PRACTICAL PEST CONTROL TIPS : SUMMER 2008 (part 1)
- Keep rain gutters clean and do not allow accumulation of leaves or water as both create conditions conducive to pests. The Culex "house mosquito"(which can transmit WNV) only requires an inch of water in which to breed. Check exterior weekly for any water accumulation.
- Bright lights attract night flying insects. For summer months, replace white exterior light bulbs with yellow bulbs (bug lights), especially those situated around entrances. Keep doors closed
- Screen windows to prevent flying insects like mosquitoes, bees and wasps from gaining access .
- Don't leave birdseed around feeders as they could attract mice, rats and other unwanted wildlife.
