Sam Bloom, President of Standard Pest Management, passedaway early this morning at the age of 87. Sam started working at Standard in1960 for his father-in-law and the business is now run by the 3^rdand 4^th generation of Blooms. Throughout the years, Sam grew thebusiness that provided not only for his own family, but also for the familiesof countless employees. Sam was also an active member of the community, servingon community boards and dedicating his time and efforts to countless religiousand political organizations. You could not help but like Sam. His friendlypersonality and positive demeanor always put a smile on your face. He was kindand always willing to help his friends, family, employees or anyone that cameacross his path. He will be truly missed.

In-home bed bug inspections de rigueur at some Manhattan private schools

In addition to writing out checks for tuition and extracurricular activities this summer, some Manhattan private school parents apparently found themselves shelling out for a licensed pest control operator to satisfy a new school requirement that all students' homes get visually inspected for bed bugs before the first day of classes.

"I have dealt with two families that needed bed bug clearance letters for their children's private schools along with the usual doctors' notes," says Gil Bloom, the entomologist and pest control operator who runs Standard Pest Management in Queens. "One was a preschool and the other a primary school."

Also new this school year: The city has implemented new reporting protocols and requirements (e.g. the Department of Education's Bed Bug Information Kit for Schools), mandating that records and statistics be kept and centralized, and that letters be sent home when the presence of bed bugs is confirmed.

The new rules may result in more incidents being reported this school year than last, says Bloom, but "overall, more folks are aware of bed bugs in general and as a result, our social institutions are learning and devising better ways to deal with them."

Bloom sounded cautiously optimistic about the 2011-12 academic future of the city's bed bugs. He took pains to remind us, for example, that schools are considered "transfer sites" rather than "infestation" sites.

"An infestation describes an established site where bed bugs are not only present but actively feeding and breeding," says Bloom. "A transfer site denotes a location where a bed bug may come off one person and be picked up by another."

To reduce the risk of home infestation from hitch-hiking bed bugs, backpacks and coats should be kept out of the bedroom and off the couch. Vacuum copiously--throwing out the vacuum cleaner bag afterward--and toss your kid's backpack into the dryer once a week on high heat for 30 minutes to kill bed bugs. Standard Pest Management, Queens, N.Y., employs an exclusion strategy to keep mice out of an apartment building’s garbage chute.

Take an old six-story, 72-unit apartment building in New York City, add brick-lined trash chutes filled with cracks and crevices, tons of garbage and a basement where that garbage collected, and you have a recipe for a serious mouse infestation and unhappy tenants.

The property management company for the building contacted Standard Pest Management in Queens to bid on pest control in three of their newly acquired buildings. Joshua Bloom, quality assurance director for Standard Pest Management, explains, “Inspections of the first two buildings showed no unusual pest activity but in building three, a severe mouse problem was found.”

The apartment building’s trash chutes previously led to garbage incinerators in the basement but now those same chutes are used to convey refuse to the trash compactor. The garbage then accumulates in the basement compacting unit until it is compacted and removed. Lined with deteriorating brick and concrete, these trash chutes provided ample harborage for mice at the base of the chutes. The building contained two separate chutes, one of which was infested, and the tenants from 10 to 15 units adjacent to that chute complained of rodent activity on higher floors.

Though the mice were harboring in the basement area, from there they scurried up the chute walls and through cracks and crevices, emerging as unwanted guests into apartments. The garbage from 72 apartments provided ample nourishment for the growing mouse population in the building.

AN EXCLUSION STRATEGY. Exclusion work is not new, but it continues to be one of the best IPM practices for preventing rodent and pest entry. Rodents can access buildings through openings as small as V inch. Modern IPM practices recommend that rodents be prevented from moving through these pathways by sealing openings.

“We knew that if we were to rely upon the superintendent to perform any kind of significant exclusion, it would not be successful, and we couldn’t take the risk of leaving it up to management to successfully eliminate the access points,” explains Bloom. “We knew that using our pest-proofing protocols was the only guaranteed solution to this problem”

One of the tools in this protocol is Xcluder Fill Fabric, manufactured by Global Material Technologies in Buffalo Grove, Ill. The material is made from coarse stainless steel and poly fibers and is designed to form a resilient and impenetrable barrier against rodents and pests. Rodents cannot chew or push through Xcluder, which is 100-percent nontoxic and harmless to the environment, the company says. “It makes more sense to initially exclude the mice instead of relying on baiting and trapping after the pests have already made entry,” Bloom said.

In addition to Xcluder, the company used Pure Fill foam to help secure Xcluder in place in the chutes. Xcluder is designed to be extremely easy to install due to its highly flexible, compressible nature.

Simply calling an exterminator in to spray may not be enough. New York Dept Of Sanitation To Combat BedBugs

Beginning December 3rd, 2010, the New York City Department of Sanitation will require all City residents to fully encase within a sealed plastic bag all mattresses or box springs being discarded for DSNY collection. Under the new rule, failure to place a mattress or box spring out in a proper bag can result in a $100 fine. The Department will delay enforcing the new set-out rule for 30 days, followed by full enforcement beginning January 3rd, 2011. Read more here

They’ve invaded our homes, schools and trendy clothing stores. Bed bugs are here to stay, city officials said yesterday, unveiling a $500,000 plan to battle the bloodsuckers to be anchored by a planned Web portal with information about prevention, detection and managing an infestation.

“We want to say to bed bugs from the City Council: ‘Drop dead,’” City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said. “We’re bringing some money to the table to outspend you and drive you from the five boroughs.”

While bed bugs don’t carry disease, they do wreck havoc emotionally and economically, officials said, which is why the city created a bed bug advisory panel last year to come up with recommendations. There had been confusion over which agencies had bed bug responsibilities — hence the suggestion to establish a “bed bug team” headed by a qualified entomologist and to create protocols for inspection, code enforcement and for the disposal of items.

“The problem is big. It’s growing. It’s going to be with us for a while,” Dan Kass, of the Health Department, said. But nobody knows why the little creatures — who can live in places other than beds and can survive more than six months without eating — have come back with a “vengeance” after disappearing decades ago, he noted. Theories include changes in pesticides and increase in international travel.

By all accounts, the bedbugs are swarming our defenses.

Now after months of planning and, one can only assume, military-campaign-like preparation, the city is ready to release its counterattack strategy on Wednesday at 2 p.m. on the steps of City Hall.

“If fully implemented, the recommendations could reverse the current increase in bedbug activity and actually improve our situation,” Gil Bloom, president of Standard Pest Management, told Brick Underground.

Mr. Bloom, one of 10 members of the mayor’s Bedbug Advisory Boardcreated last year, also provided the blog with some of the key points of the 39-page report, which is said to include: 1) a team to coordinate bedbug control efforts; 2) a “Bedbug Academy” for building managers; 3) an online resource of bedbug facts, checked by the city (presumably to counter user-generated sources of information like Bedbugregistry.com); 4) better guidelines for disposing of infested furniture and clothes, and better public education about how to handle such items; and 5) higher priority for bedbugs in housing court.

Paying for the effort may pose a problem, as Mr. Bloom acknowledged to Brick Underground. “There are many obstacles, including misinformation, unwarranted stigma and fear, and cost factors,” he said. “But if these obstacles are not overcome, the situation will get worse, and the bedbugs will just laugh.”

Check out this swarm we stumbled across at one of our accounts a few weeks ago. This was the first time I personally saw one of these. As quickly as a aswarm appears it also can move on. Even though the customer was very upset about this we advised against treatment and sure enough it was gone within hours. Had it been a stinging insects nest we surely would have treated. A swarm as defined by wikipedia "Swarming is the natural means of reproduction of honey bee colonies. A new honey bee colony is formed when the queen bee leaves the colony with a large group of worker bees, a process called swarming. In the prime swarm, about 60% of the worker bees leave the original hive location with the old queen. This swarm can contain thousands to tens of thousands of bees. Swarming is mainly a spring phenomenon, usually within a two- or three-week period depending on the locale, but occasional swarms can happen throughout the producing season."

Pest control is always changing and evolving, so in the last year we have added two new soft baits to our rodenticide arsenal. Its always a discussion in the office and between the techs which one of these works better and in what situation. I finally had the opportunity to put em to the test. So i placed both baits in a Bell Labs RTU that was having mouse activity.

Decided to show off some of my favorite tools we use here at standard. I put in the Pur Fill gun that is great for sealing out insects, the foam comes in white and black for exterior applications(very cool). The Pestifoamer, the greatest tool for applying foam in a commercial kitchen setting. The foam eats away the scummy gelatinous material that allows fruit flies to breed. The new Hilti gun is great for anchoring bait stations into concrete, allows us to secure bait stations properly. I also show off the See snake which is a great tool for taking a look into wall voids and finding stuff. These are some of the tools that allow us to continue to be one of the most modern pest conrol companies in new york.

After several acquaintances complained to us recently about moth infestations in their Manhattan apartments, we checked with our pest management expert, Gil Bloom, to see whether a larger trend is taking wing.
According to Bloom, complaints about pantry moths (a.k.a. meal moths) have been on the upswing for several years now, corresponding with a trend toward bulk shopping. Call it the Costco effect.

"People used to buy things in smaller containers, and now they have a huge bag of flour or box of cereal sitting in the pantry and they don't realize that it's become infested," he says.
Moreover, there are more moths in the food chain these days as stricter environmental regulations have sharply curtailed fumigation practices. Read the rest after the jump.

Yesterday, Ohio electrified the nation’s growing legion of bed bug sufferers: The state asked feds for emergency permission to battle the bugs with an insecticide said to be 100 percent effective against the blood suckers but not approved for home use.

"The Department of Environmental Conservation has not requested that exemption,” says Gil Bloom, a BrickTank expert and an entomologist who is also the president of Standard Pest Management in Queens and a member of Mayor Bloomberg’s nascent Bedbug Advisory Board. “I can only conjecture they’re probably taking a wait and see approach.”

Roaches and Mice Thrive in a Recession

Brace yourselves for more fun news: recessions, it turns out, while bad for humans, may be good for cockroaches and mice.

Veterans in the pest control industry said that their customers, both residential and commercial, appear to be sacrificing on regular exterminations as a cost-cutting measure. While restaurants are bound by the threats of steep fines, apartment landlords and office buildings are cutting back services, the exterminators said.

Robert Agatowski, with Control Exterminating Company on East 33rd Street in Manhattan, recalled a recent call from a general manager of a business.

“He said, ‘It’s very simple. I don’t know if we can make the rent or the payroll,’” Mr. Agatowski recalled. “‘So in other words, you’re out. We’ll step on the bugs and kick the mice.’ The exterminating almost becomes like a luxury item.”

He and other exterminators interviewed this week were careful not to name names.

“People are being penny wise and pound foolish,” said Gil Bloom, with Standard Pest Management in Long Island City, Queens. “Monitoring pest control is very much pest prevention. It’s not just killing what’s there today. One mouse, a month later, could easily be a dozen mice.”

This new pamphlet released by the city explains how you (the property owner) and the building superintendent, can create a rat hostile environment. Here are some key topics.

Any portion of your property, in either public or private space, that is "conducive to feeding and habitation of rats" is a violation of the law. And each violation carries a penalty of $200 to $2000.

Trim trees so they do not touch your building. Many pests, especially ants, gain access this way.
Seal up holes around pipes, cable entry points and remove lint accumulation from dryer flaps.
Pest proof the base of all exterior doors especially the garage as it often provides pest harborage.
Store refuse and recyclables away from the exterior as they can attract a number of pests.
Keep firewood and debris away from the house and make sure it's up off the ground.

Keep rain gutters clean and do not allow accumulation of leaves or water as both create conditions conducive to pests. The Culex "house mosquito"(which can transmit WNV) only requires an inch of water in which to breed. Check exterior weekly for any water accumulation.
Bright lights attract night flying insects. For summer months, replace white exterior light bulbs with yellow bulbs (bug lights), especially those situated around entrances. Keep doors closed
Screen windows to prevent flying insects like mosquitoes, bees and wasps from gaining access .
Don't leave birdseed around feeders as they could attract mice, rats and other unwanted wildlife.
